I Heart Faces: Yellow

by Dena

12 is the new pink

by Dena

When a family with three boys brings a little girl home, things change. My mother in law told us that we would all have to be nicer because girls are more fragile.

Boo

People told us that she would  bring new things to our lives that we had never seen. They hit the nail right on the head. We didn’t have any pink…

RVW 004Or lace and fluffy trim…

RVW 001She has taken us to gymnastics, fishing, twirling, hunting, on live TV, and early mornings, snuggled up to get warm and giggle about silly things. Someone told me yesterday that she is such a blessing to them and how lucky we all are. I had to agree.

Yesterday she turned 12. This week she has had a band concert, tried out for (and got) majorette, and been in a dance recital. We see pink everywhere now, and we love it.

Emma Mae

by Dena

Things have been wild and crazy in our worlds. It has been almost like December around here! No matter how busy we get with dance recitals, try-outs, and life in general we don’t forget birthdays. Today would have been our great-grandmother’s birthday.

Mama Snooks

Mama Snooks

Her name was Emma Mae but we called her Mama Snooks. Nobody really knows why. She was a soft and gentle lady who made her own clothes and scoffed at the store bought “off the rack” items. Nothing fit her small frame like something she could make herself.

I remember once when we were little she babysat us and my brothers, who were about 3 and 5 or so, asked to practice their calf roping skills on her. She said yes and was soon tied to a chair, unable to move!

RVW 009I was asked to bring something sentimental to a workshop next week. The first thing I thought of was the baby doll quilt she made for me from her dress scraps. I can still picture her wearing those dresses. Or, my wedding ring. After she passed I was given her engagement ring. It is white gold with a flawless ruby and hand carving design on the setting. Like she was, it is unique and beautiful.

Happy Birthday Mama Snooks.

Family Reunion:Last (and favorite) Dish!

by Dena

Since last weekend we have done two cake recipes that we took to our family reunion.  But, oddly enough, the dish that we got the most feedback on from the crowd was a side dish.  We actually had people come up and ask us for this recipe, which made Joy happy because she was the one who actually put this salad together.  Like most everything we post on here, it’s fairly easy and doesn’t really have a specific measuring system.

For cornbread salad, you start off with baked cornbread.  For this big gathering, we used 3 boxes (Jiffy which is our fave) but if you have a regular meal  you can just use 2 or even 1 if it’s for a small group.  Crumble it up and mix in chopped green onions, for a large bowl you can use a the entire bunch in those little produce bags, but again use more or less according to taste.   Mix in chopped bell pepper, and then comes the glue that holds it all together…..Miracle Whip.  I told Joy to add enough to make it creamy.  Now, I realize that’s a pretty ambiguous instruction but there’s no other way to say it.  You really have to do a mix and taste on this.  Basically when it is the consistency of dressing, it’s about right.  It’s best to put it in the fridge over night, then when you’re ready just pull it out, top it with tomatoes to garnish and that’s it.

Some people like to put any number of things in this such as corn, peas, jalapenos, and bacon to name a few.  (***bacon makes it even more perfect if that’s even possible***)  Just be aware that the more stuff you add, the less like dressing it will be.  We sampled a similar salad that had lots of veggies and less cornbread.  We liked it but Mama said it seemed like the cornbread had “walked through it on stilts” which means she needed more bread and less veggies.  However you decided to make it, it’s delicious and your guests will love it.

I Heart Faces: Celebrating Mom

by Dena

091a

It was hard to choose a photo that celebrates moms.  I have lots of new mom shots but this one is one of my very favorites. It was her her first time to see her first great-grandchild. She thinks this picture makes her look as if she has no teeth, but I think it is beautiful.

Mother’s Day

by Dena

Happy Mother’s Day!

RVW 200

sr 063aOur moms (Our mom and my MIL) are strong southern women who know everything from how to pluck a chicken to how to arrange the cutlery on a formal dinner.  They also know just about everything in between, which is why we love them so much and depend on them so frequently.  Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, and know that you are leaving your mark on all the generations that are following behind you!
