About Us

Shower 073aThe sisters behind Red Velvet Wisdom:

Dena–Born and raised in the rural South, Dena is a special education teacher, photographer, church pianist, social service volunteer, and somehow finds time to be a wife and mother.  She got the idea for creating this site after countless lengthy discussions with her sister about all of the people they know with amazing stories and recipes that should be shared with the world. She cooks but rarely from scratch, using any shortcut available.

Joy–Little sister to Dena and raised from the same long line of fabulous cooks, Joy works in the mental health field, blogs, judges pageants, and mentors collegiate women at her Alma Mater.  She’s currently better at making reservations than she is at cooking a meal, but she considers herself a work in progress in this area.

We love to remember the old ways and how things used to be. In our fast paced lifestyle, nothing brings us back to those times faster than a mother who still can’t use call waiting or only uses a microwave to heat water.

  2. I enjoyed the site. way too much of our personal history is lost becouse we are too busy to take time to listen. thanks

  3. The values that our older generation have been lost. Through this website and Aunt Geneva’s book, I hope that we can begin to get back to the ‘good ‘ole days’ and enjoy the simpler life. Great job on the website. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!! Carla :)

  4. WOW!!! I am thoroughly impressed! This is really a beautiful website – congratulations to both of you… after reading this, I feel a “part” of your family:) The love and wisdom that has been passed down to the two of you is very evident by reading this. Job VERY well done.

  5. DUMPLINGS!!!

  6. I would just like to say that I love what you guys are doing! When I was reading some of the stories they remind me of my Granny. She was born in Harleton, Texas but had lived in New Boston for over 20 years. Granny has that special touch like all grandmas do. One thing that she makes is homemade coconut pie. The crust will melt in your mouth, and the coconut feeling will literally lift you off of your feet. She makes it from scrath and all the time she makes it she uses a pinch of this and a pinch of that. She doesnt need a measuring cup or a measuring spoon. It always amazes me. If I tried to cook and didn’t use a measuring cup, all I can say is that there would be disaster brewing in the kitchen. It takes someone like Granny to make and bake, never ever braking out the old measuring cup. SHe is a one of a kind that I have learned so many life lessons from and have so much respect for. I have respect for my mom too. She can cook some mean Mexican food and over the years I have learned how to cook so many things from watching mom and granny cooking at their best.

I printed the whole website off for my grandma (she’s turning 90 this month), and she loved it. It’s so nice to hear stories from our home. Thanks to you both.
