Joy and Dobbin:

by Dena

Joy’s Fatal Attraction to Horses

We are going to tell the story of when Joy was a teenager and rode the old nag that Dad had found and nursed back to health from starvation. Perception is everything. I was there but our stories are not at all like. This is what Joy remembered with my interjections following.

Joy: I was on an old horse that didn’t have a lot of get up and go. My sister in law threw a tennis ball that whizzed right by it’s head. (We don’t play tennis so why they were playing at this moment is beyond me)

Dena: I was sitting on the back of the pickup with my little niece and Joy’s dog, who was leashed to the cab of said truck so he wouldn’t bother the horse.

Joy: The tennis ball stunned the horse and it flailed in terror.

Dena: The horse looked up.

Joy: I knew that I would end up under the horse with my legs broken. I was terrified.

Dena:  The horse took a step.

Joy: I knew I was going to fall off the wild thrashing horse.

Dena: Joy started screaming, which made the dog run towards her. He was still on a leash and didn’t run far, but instead ended up hanging from the back of the truck.

Joy: Nobody would help me.

Dena: I was quickly attending to the dog, making certain he was not injured. He was thrashing wildly due to Joy’s piercing screams.

Joy: Still, here I am near death with no assistance.

Dena: I looked over and the horse, Dobbin, was standing with his head in a small live oak tree. Joy, still screaming.  Tennis players were laughing. Dad finally came to help Joy.

Joy: This is why I hate everybody.

Dena: The dog was OK!

Visual proof of Joy’s gentle touch with a horse.

Memory Lane, 1978

by Dena

Today we celebrate Joy’s birthday! I could go on and on about how I spent years begging for a sister only to be told, “No!”.  My two younger brothers certainly put a damper on a desire for more children.  I think they were wise in waiting until I was almost grown to have her, since I could do the majority of the night time feedings.

I was thinking of how different things were when she was born. I saved everyone’s green stamps to buy her first baby blanket. GREEN STAMPS! They went they way of the hard plastic yellow baby carrier and pinafore dresses.

The only tradition that stays in place is the birthday cake. Even though Joy is three hours away, I still celebrate her special day.

I’ve had the ick and really didn’t feel like doing a creative shot for her this year. Mainly, we toasted Joy and ate a cupcake.

Happy Birthday to Joy, whose legal name for the first year of her life was…Baby Girl. I wanted to name her Stevie Joy but I had no takers on that.

Happy  Birthday, Baby Girl. And Many More.

Royal Wedding vs. Redneck Wedding

by Dena

Wedding, wedding, wedding. It’s on TV, the internet, and at my house. My world is consumed with weddings. How do I keep them straight?

  • I heard that Kate Middleton has a few decoy dresses so that the real dress won’t be leaked before the wedding.  So does Joy. Hers are all at David’s Bridal in Little Rock. Try to find hers!
  • Kate and William will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Joy and Gavin will be married by the Miller County Justice of the Peace. (our dad) He’s done many weddings but is getting nervous about this one.
  • The Queen just met Kate’s family. They had a lovely brunch and all got to know each other. What a coincidence. In a week we will meet Gavin’s parents and have BBQ and potato salad. Pinkies out!
  • How will both wear their hair? People wonder about that one! Joy has a metric ton of naturally curly red hair. Luckily, her friend Jessica is a hairdresser and a bridesmaid. If only Kate could be so lucky.Old pic

The list is endless! We only have one week til the big day. All the small details are coming together. I only hope that Kate and Will have as much fun planning theirs as we have had with Joy’s.

“Dena, could have used a worse picture?”

JJSo, this is how they really look.

Two Weeks

by Dena

Time is flying as the Royal Wedding approaches. Oh, and two weeks til Joy and Gavin’s too. I’m sure there will be lots of similarities in the two weddings, but one difference is we aren’t keeping everything a secret.

As we begin the two week wedding countdown, here are some pictures from a few weeks ago of the happy couple.

This was my first time taking pictures of Gavin. He has this talent of closing his eyes at the exact moment the shutter snaps. I think the next post will be a collage of eyes closed pics.
