Memory Lane, 1978

by Dena

Today we celebrate Joy’s birthday! I could go on and on about how I spent years begging for a sister only to be told, “No!”.  My two younger brothers certainly put a damper on a desire for more children.  I think they were wise in waiting until I was almost grown to have her, since I could do the majority of the night time feedings.

I was thinking of how different things were when she was born. I saved everyone’s green stamps to buy her first baby blanket. GREEN STAMPS! They went they way of the hard plastic yellow baby carrier and pinafore dresses.

The only tradition that stays in place is the birthday cake. Even though Joy is three hours away, I still celebrate her special day.

I’ve had the ick and really didn’t feel like doing a creative shot for her this year. Mainly, we toasted Joy and ate a cupcake.

Happy Birthday to Joy, whose legal name for the first year of her life was…Baby Girl. I wanted to name her Stevie Joy but I had no takers on that.

Happy  Birthday, Baby Girl. And Many More.

Healthy Birds

by Dena

A few years ago when Joy was moving away to college I was a little distraught. How could she LEAVE ME? A good friend told me her pearls of wisdom that healthy birds leave the nest. I’ve always remembered that saying and at times, wondered about a few of our little hatchlings.

On the eve of his 22nd birthday, brother is ready to fly the coop. While it is good to see him making plans I’m thinking of my nest (secretly of course, in the back of my mind)

Enough about that. He’s twenty-two today. Is it odd that twenty-two was a spelling word this week? It was the only number listed. Yes, it is odd. Now for pictures of the birthday boy. He is strikingly handsome, so beware.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I like to share

by Dena

Not always, but do like to share my birthday. We have a total of FIVE birthdays among family and friends on January 4. Sadly, some have passed and we aren’t able to celebrate with them anymore. I think of each one though, whether they are here or not.

We’ve had my birthday dinner, and I got a new purse and wallet.  If I ever needed a 12 step program it would be for my purse addiction.

The only downside to today is that my mom and her sister are both really sick. One year they made the cakes with the Barbie dolls in them and the cake looked like a dress for me and my cousin, Robin. Her birthday is the 3rd so she was a little too early for the J4 club. I still count her most of the time though!

So, Happy Birthday to all the ones who celebrate today and those who are thinking of the ones who did.

50 is the new 30

by Dena

Or so we keep telling ourselves. Like in the song Strawberry Wine, “I still remember…when 30 was old”.

Lately a few of my friends have reached a milestone birthday. Anything ending in a zero is a reason to celebrate and celebrate we do. Last night we kidnapped one of our more headstrong birthday girls because she was determined to get out of turning 50. She even went to a workshop out of town on her birthday. It made it a little more difficult, but nothing stopped us.

We decided to have an Elsie the Cow themed party for her. A few years ago on a bright and sunny day on the first of April, she had a message to call a Mrs. L.C.DeCow about some udder covers that they needed embroidered. Not even when they answered BORDEN’S MILK COMPANY did she catch on. SHe was thinking of the poor cows with mastitis that might need an udder cover, and her side business of embroidery would help. But alas, it was a joke and she walked away with a few free milk coupons from the people who felt sorry for her for having such mean friends. (Of which, I had NO part in this, I swear)

So, we got our masks on.

And we got our milk and cookies ready. I wish I had a picture of the platter made like an udder filled with cookies.

We grabbed her as she hit town and drove a few hours away to a place called Santa Land. It was awesome.

Santa Land

Then, we went to eat a delightful Italian place called Oliveto’s in Tyler, Texas. Our waiter was the best I’ve ever seen. He took his life in his hands by putting a bib on the birthday girl and telling her there was extra fiber in her ravioli. I should know, she bit me on the way down there!

While I”m doing pictures, I have to throw in a recent one of the 40th birthday bash that I attended. I don’t know who gets these together, but they are fun!

The Baby: Some things never change.

by Dena

For too many years our brother was known as the baby.  I guess everyone thought he was the last of the brood.  As he grew older he was called Scottie Brown by someone and it stuck for many more years.  He went through phases, such as eating only cereal, smashed bread, sitting only in one chair, wearing only white,  and then refusing to wear clothes at all.  Now, at least he wears clothes.

12 is the new pink

by Dena

When a family with three boys brings a little girl home, things change. My mother in law told us that we would all have to be nicer because girls are more fragile.

Boo

People told us that she would  bring new things to our lives that we had never seen. They hit the nail right on the head. We didn’t have any pink…

RVW 004Or lace and fluffy trim…

RVW 001She has taken us to gymnastics, fishing, twirling, hunting, on live TV, and early mornings, snuggled up to get warm and giggle about silly things. Someone told me yesterday that she is such a blessing to them and how lucky we all are. I had to agree.

Yesterday she turned 12. This week she has had a band concert, tried out for (and got) majorette, and been in a dance recital. We see pink everywhere now, and we love it.

Alexis 028bHappy 12th Birthday Boo….and many more.
